Scotland: A Solo Female Traveller’s Dream

Whether you’re exploring bustling cities or serene countryside, there’s always something magical to discover when visiting Scotland. I’ve travelled to Scotland many times, as both a solo traveller and with other females, and can honestly say I never felt unsafe while exploring this beautiful country.

Must-Visit Scotland Cities

  • Edinburgh: The capital city is a perfect blend of old and new. Wander through the medieval streets of Old Town, hike up Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views, and explore the historic Edinburgh Castle.

  • Glasgow: Known for its vibrant music scene and friendly locals, Glasgow offers a mix of cultural attractions and trendy neighbourhoods. Don’t miss the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum or a stroll along the River Clyde.

  • Inverness: The gateway to the Highlands, Inverness is a charming city with easy access to Loch Ness. Keep an eye out for Nessie, the legendary Loch Ness Monster!

  • Stirling: A small city with a big history, Stirling is home to the iconic Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument. It’s a must-visit for history buffs.

Safety Tips for Solo Female Travellers

  • Stay in Safe Areas: Major cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow have safe, well-lit areas perfect for solo travellers. During my trips, I always stayed in central locations with good reviews, which made exploring the cities easy and enjoyable. I recommend researching accommodations in central locations and reading the reviews before booking your accommodation.

  • Use Public Transport: Scotland’s public transport system is reliable and safe. I found the trains and buses not only efficient but also a great way to see the stunning landscapes of Scotland.

  • Trust Your Instincts: As with any destination, always stay aware of your surroundings. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to remove yourself from the situation. You should never feel embarrassed to walk into a more crowded area or ask someone for help.

  • Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and share your itinerary with someone back home. I recommend sharing your live location with someone through FindMyPhone or a similar app. Free Wi-Fi is widely available, so you can easily stay connected. I always used local SIM cards for reliable internet access throughout my travels.

Embrace the Scottish Culture

One of the joys of solo female travel is immersing yourself in the local culture. Here are some fun ways to experience the best of Scotland:

  • Join a Tour: Guided tours are a great way to learn about Scotland’s history and meet fellow travellers. Whether it’s a city walking tour, a whisky distillery tour, or a Highland adventure, there’s something for everyone. I’ve joined a ghost tour in Edinburgh, which was both spooky and fascinating, and a Highlands tour that was incredibly informative and fun.

  • Visit Local Markets: Scotland’s markets are a treasure trove of local crafts, foods, and souvenirs. Check out the Grassmarket in Edinburgh or the Barras Market in Glasgow. The Grassmarket in Edinburgh became my go-to spot for unique finds and delicious food - don’t miss out on a scoop from Mary’s Milk Bar!

  • Try Traditional Food: Don’t leave Scotland without tasting haggis, neeps, and tatties. For my vegetarian and vegan friends, the good news is you can find haggis alternatives without the meat and dairy! But don’t fear, if you’re not feeling adventurous, there are plenty of other delicious options, from fresh seafood to hearty soups.

  • Attend a Festival: Scotland is known for its lively festivals, particularly the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. These events are perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere and enjoying world-class performances.

Scotland’s Nature and Adventure

Scotland’s natural beauty is one of its biggest draws. Here are some must-see spots for nature lovers:

  1. Isle of Skye: This island is famous for its dramatic landscapes, including the Fairy Pools and the Old Man of Storr. It’s a hiker’s paradise!

  2. Cairngorms National Park: With its mountains, forests, and wildlife, this national park is perfect for outdoor adventures like hiking, skiing, and wildlife watching.

  3. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park: A stunning area of lochs, hills, and forests, perfect for hiking, boating, and exploring picturesque villages.

  4. The Highlands: No trip to Scotland is complete without a visit to the Highlands. From Glen Coe to Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK, the landscapes are simply breathtaking.

Making Friends While Solo Travelling in Scotland

Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to be alone. Scotland’s friendly locals and fellow travellers are easy to connect with. Hostels, cafes, and pubs are great places to meet new people. Apps like Meetup and Couchsurfing Events can also help you find social gatherings and activities. In my travels, I made some wonderful friends during my hostel stays and have always found fellow travellers to be warm and welcoming.
