25 Essential London Travel Tips and Hacks

London is one of those cities that truly has it all—from royal history to vibrant street markets—but navigating it can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. Having explored this city countless times myself, I’ve pulled together my 25 must-know tips and hacks to help you discover London like a seasoned traveller.

A Guide to Enjoying the Best of London, England

1. Mind the Tube!

Ah, the London Underground—or as the locals call it, "The Tube." This is your best friend for getting around the city quickly, but here’s the inside scoop: avoid it during rush hour (7:30-9:30 am & 5-7 pm). Trust me, you’ll thank me when you’re not crammed into a train like a sardine. Grab an Oyster Card or use contactless payment to make travelling on the Tube smooth and cost-efficient. Oh, and don’t forget to mind the gap!

2. Free Museums? Yes, Please!

London is generous when it comes to art, history, and culture—many of its world-class museums are free! The British Museum, the National Gallery, and the Tate Modern are just a few places where you can marvel at art and history without spending a pound. Perfect for budget-conscious travellers who still want to soak up all that culture.

3. Parks Are Your Oasis

London may be a bustling city, but it’s also home to some of England’s most stunning green spaces. Take a break from the hustle and bustle by visiting Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, or St. James’s Park. Pack a picnic, rent a paddle boat, or just kick back and enjoy a peaceful afternoon watching Londoners walk their dogs. Bonus tip: Primrose Hill offers incredible views of the city skyline!

4. Skip the Line at Major Attractions

If you’re planning to visit major attractions like the London Eye, Tower of London, or Westminster Abbey, book your tickets online in advance. This not only saves you time but can also save you a few quid! For Harry Potter fans, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour is a must, but tickets can sell out months in advance—so plan ahead!

5. Take a Walking Tour (Or Two)

London’s winding streets are packed with stories waiting to be uncovered, and one of the best ways to experience the city is on foot. There are free walking tours (though tipping is appreciated!) that focus on everything from Jack the Ripper mysteries to the royal family’s history. If you prefer something more offbeat, check out London’s street art scene in Shoreditch, where vibrant murals add pops of colour to the gritty urban landscape.

6. London Markets: A Feast for the Senses

For foodies, London’s markets are an absolute must. Start with Borough Market, where you can sample everything from artisanal cheeses to mouthwatering pastries. For a more eclectic vibe, Camden Market is your go-to spot for quirky finds, street food, and vintage shopping. Both are perfect places to eat like a local and experience London’s diverse market scene and a must-do on any London itinerary.

7. Embrace English Pub Culture

No London England travel tips blog is complete without a nod to the pub scene! Londoners love their pubs, and so will you. Whether you're after a hearty Sunday roast or just want to relax with a pint of ale, there’s no shortage of cozy spots to soak up the local atmosphere. Try a historic pub like The George Inn, or if you want something more modern, head to Shoreditch for trendy gastropubs with a twist.

8. Day Trips: Venture Beyond the City

London is surrounded by amazing places that make for great day trips. Hop on a train and you could be exploring the university town of Oxford, the canals of Cambridge, or even the prehistoric mystery of Stonehenge. If you’re feeling regal, Windsor Castle is just a short ride away and offers a chance to see a functioning royal residence.

9. Weather-Proof Your Plans

London’s weather is, well, let’s call it unpredictable. Pack layers and always have an umbrella handy—you never know when the rain might strike. But don’t let a drizzle dampen your spirits! Many of London’s activities, from its museums to its theatres, are perfect for rainy days. And when the sun does decide to shine, make sure you’ve got a spot in a park or by the Thames to enjoy it.

10. Get a Taste of London

London is a food lover’s paradise. From classic fish and chips to international delights, there’s something to please every palate. For those with a sweet tooth, Afternoon Tea is a must-do—it's as British as it gets! For something truly special, head to Sketch or The Ritz for a luxurious afternoon experience. And of course, don’t leave London without trying a full English breakfast!

11. Watch the Changing of the Guard

If you're in London, catching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is a one-in-a-lifetime experience. Get there early to secure a good spot because the ceremony is a popular one. As it does attract quite the crowd, be mindful of your surroundings and always be aware of pickpocketers.

12. Contactless Payments Everywhere

London is very tech-savvy, and most places accept contactless payments, including buses, shops, and restaurants. You won’t need much cash—just tap your card or phone, and you’re good to go. However, it’s always handy to have a bit of cash for smaller markets or tips.

13. Explore London by River

Hop on the Thames Clipper for a scenic, affordable way to explore the city from the water. This boat service connects major attractions like the Tower of London, Greenwich, and the London Eye. It’s like a river cruise but without the hefty price tag - winning!

14. Visit During Off-Peak Times

If you want to avoid the crowds (and save some money), try visiting in the shoulder seasons like spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November). The weather is generally pleasant, and you’ll experience shorter lines at major attractions.

15. Use the Bus for a Scenic Ride

While the Tube is fast, London’s iconic red double-decker buses offer a more scenic way to get around. Grab a seat on the upper deck and enjoy sightseeing on routes like the No. 11 or 24, which pass by some of the city’s top landmarks.

16. Don’t Miss a West End Show

London’s West End is like Broadway in New York but with a bit of British flair. From blockbuster musicals to smaller indie productions, there’s a show for everyone. Check out TKTS Leicester Square for discounted tickets if you’re flexible on what to see.

17. Take Advantage of Late-Night Openings

Some attractions and museums have late-night openings. For example, the Tate Modern is open until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. This is a great way to experience famous sights without the crowds and enjoy the city in a more relaxed atmosphere.

18. Walk Along the South Bank

The South Bank of the River Thames is a wonderful pedestrian-friendly area packed with street performers, pop-up food stalls, and beautiful riverside views. Stroll from the London Eye to the Tate Modern, passing by landmarks like Shakespeare’s Globe and the Millennium Bridge.

19. Keep Left

Whether you’re on an escalator or walking down a busy street, Londoners stick to the left. On escalators in Tube stations, always stand on the right if you’re not walking, and leave the left side clear for those in a hurry.

20. Explore the Neighbourhoods

London isn’t just about big-ticket attractions; its neighbourhoods offer a treasure trove of hidden gems. Explore Notting Hill for colourful houses and cute cafes, head to Covent Garden for lively street performances, or check out Kensington for chic boutiques and serene gardens.

21. Stay in Central London

If it’s your first time in London, stay in a centrally located area like Covent Garden, Soho, or South Kensington. It’ll make sightseeing much easier since you’ll be close to many major attractions, and you won’t waste time commuting.

22. Harrods Food Hall

If you’re planning a trip to the world-famous Harrods, do not sleep on visiting their historic Food Halls. From sparkling seafood and exotic fruits to signature sourdough freshly baked every day, this is one place you do not want to miss. Head over to their  Roastery & Bake Hall for one of the best cupcakes you will ever eat in your life - thank me later!

23. Use the Public Toilets in Department Stores or Museums

Public restrooms can be tricky to find in London, especially free ones. A great hack is to pop into major department stores like Selfridges or Harrods, or large museums such as the V&A or the National Gallery, which all have clean, well-maintained restrooms available for visitors.

24. Walk with Purpose

Londoners are notorious for walking fast. Don’t cause a scene and stop in the middle of a footpath as this is one sure way to piss off a Londoner. Walk fast or get out of the way - sounds brutal but you’ll thank me for this one.

25. Tax-free Shopping

Until January 1, 2021, travellers from outside the EU visiting the UK for leisure or business could benefit from a VAT refund through the Retail Export Scheme, also known as tax-free shopping. However, the UK government has since discontinued this program. But fear not- overseas visitors can still buy items VAT-free in-store and have them sent directly to overseas addresses. We love to see some compromise!
